SAR-I-PUL (PAN): A day after a prison riot, the jail superintendent for northern Sar-i-Pul province was dismissed on Thursday, an official said.

On Wednesday, inmates demanded the jail superintendent’s dismissal and better facilities. The prisoners warned of continuing their protest unless the demands were met, the police chief said.

In order to placate the inmates, the prison chief and three police officers were sacked, Brig. Gen. Asadullah Sherzad told Pajhwok Afghan News.

About the call for living facilities, he said, whenever there is no space for accommodation of the inmates, they would be sent to other provinces.

But Gen. Mohammad Afandi Rabati, the prison director, said the inmates had attempted a jailbreak. Their effort was frustrated by security guards with the help of Afghan soldiers, he claimed.

The protest was planned by about 50 inmates on death row, he said. Three detained riot leaders were under investigation, Gen. Rabati said. Currently there are 224 inmates in the central jail, including 20 women. The female prisoners are being kept separately.
