KABUL, Danish ambassador to Afghanistan said on Tuesday.

His government would spend $3.7m through the United Nations World Food Program (UNWFP) and Save the Children organisation during the upcoming winter to provide food assistance for drought-affected people in northern and northwestern provinces, René Dinesen said in the statement.

“Almost three million people are without food in Afghanistan and acute malnutrition is becoming continuously more prevalent among children,” he added.

Humanitarian assistance was crucial to address the urgent needs of the millions of affected Afghans, so the aid ought to be accompanied by a stronger focus on long-term development, the statement continued.

“This is the eight slow-onset dry spell in Afghanistan since 2000. It clearly indicates that the only sustainable way forward is long-term development of the agricultural sector,” the ambassador explained.

Denmark has been supporting agriculture and livelihood projects in Afghanistan with approximately $20m in 2011, the statement concluded.
