QAL-I-NAW (PAN): An eight-member rebel group joined the peace process in the Maqur district of northwestern Badghis province, an official said on Wednesday.
The group, which had been active against government forces in the Mohammadzai village, turned in six Kalashnikovs, a machine gun and a rocket, provincial intelligence head, Col. Abdul Qayyum, told Pajhwok Afghan News.
Mullah Sadu Khan, the group leader, said he had decided to renounce the insurgency after realising that it was illegitimate. They were ready to help the government maintain security in the district, Qayyum said.
