KABUL participants’ suggestion regarding changes in the commission’s composition.
The four-day traditional Loya Jirga on the strategic cooperation pact with the US concluded on Saturday with the release of a 76-article declaration, recommending the creation of American bases in the country for a decade.
Endorsing the agreement with US was necessary for maintaining security and strengthening Afghanistan‘s economy, said the delegates, who also demanded changes in the peace mechanism and the council’s leadership.
Responding to the call, HPC member Maulvi Shahzad Shahid said: “We welcome every move toward improving the peace body’s efficiency.” As a result of the changes, the peace process would regain momentum, he told Pajhwok Afghan News.
The declaration says a delegation be sent to Pakistan to probe the death of the government’s chief negotiator and the council’s chairman, Prof. Burhanuddin Rabbani. Participants urged Islamabad to change its policy toward Afghanistan and honestly support the reconciliation drive.
