Sar-i-Pul residents ask governor to quit

SAR-I-PUL (PAN): Hundreds of people on Sunday rallied against the governor in northern Sar-i-Pul province, asking him to resign after his guard sexually abused a woman.

More than 2,000 people attended the rally in Sari-i-Pul city against what they claimed sexual abusing a woman by one of the governor’s guards.

“The governor should resign after his guard had sexually harassed the woman,” shouted Syed Hesamuddin, one of the protestors.

The incident last week led the prosecutor’s office to arrest the accused.

Hesamuddin said it was a peaceful protest aimed at calling for the governor to quit.

Another protestor, Mohammad Jawad, warned of violent protests if their demand was not met.

The protestors issued a resolution, calling for the governor, Syed Amwar Rahmati, to be dismissed and the accused prosecuted.

However, Rahmati said abusing the women was his guard’s personal matter. “I have no connection with the issue,” the governor told Pajhwok.

He said he would accept whatever decision against the guard was taken by the court.
