QALA-I-NAW (PAN): A suicide bomber was shot dead before he could reach NATO-led troops at the airport of northwestern Badghis province on Tuesday, an official said.
An explosion took place at 11:20am when the bomber was hit as he tried to detonate his suicide vest at the entrance to the Spanish Provincial Reconstruction Team (PRT) office.
Provincial police chief Col. Mohammad Jabbar Saleh told Pajhwok Afghan News civilians and security personnel suffered no casualties in the blast.
Police have launched an investigation to ascertain how the attacker managed to enter the airport. “We were informed that a bomber had entered the city, so the security personnel kept a tight vigil,” Col. Jabbar said.
Initial reports said the bomber was loyal to a Taliban Ghausuddin. A resident of the area, Noor Mohammad, said: “I heard an explosion and saw police killing the bomber.”
No one has so far commented about the incident.
