KABUL National Coalition on Sunday strongly condemned a suicide attack that killed 20 people and injured scores of others in northern Takhar province.

The bomber struck a funeral procession in the Kunjak area on the outskirts of Taloqan, the provincial capital, at 2:20pm, leaving 20 people dead and at least 50 others wounded. The dead included a lawmaker, Matlab Baig, tribal elders and government officials.

“It was a brutal attack on innocent people, offering funeral prayers,” a statement from the Presidential Place quoted Karzai as saying.

“The attack once again exposed the inhuman nature of terrorists, who don’t even let Muslims hold religious ceremonies in a peaceful manner,” the president said, extending his deep condolences to the victims’ families.

The Wolesi Jirga also condemned the attack that left one of its members dead. In a statement, the lower house denounced the assault as an un-Islamic and inhuman act, calling for the perpetrators to be brought to justice.

“Our enemies don’t want political stability in Afghanistan. Therefore, they target influential Afghan figures,” a spokesman for the National Coalition of Afghanistan told Pajhwok over the telephone.

Syed Fazil Sancharaki asked the officials concerned to make serious efforts at arresting the mastermind behind the suicide attack.
