Essential items’ prices stay stable in Kabul

KABUL): Prices of essential commodities, including food items, fuel and gold, remained unchanged in Kabul during the outgoing week, retailers said on Thursday.

A 50-kilogram bag of Brazilian sugar was priced at 2,160 afghanis ($43.6), the same amount of Pakistani flour at 1040afs and rice at 2,500afs, said the Food Traders’ Union head.

Haji Fazlul Rahman told Pajhwok Afghan News the rates of other food items also remained unchanged, with a five-kg tin of ghee accounting for 420afs, a kilo of black tea for 190afs and the same amount of green tea for 160afs.

Wholesale prices of eatables varied in parts of the city. A shopkeeper in the Karta-i-Seh locality said he sold a 50-kg sack of Pakistani flour for 1,100afs. Shukrullah added the same amount of Pakistani rice cost 2,600afs and a 50-kg bag of Brazilian sugar 2,220afs.

Each of the 30 government-run shops sold a kilo of gas for 55 afghanis, while the Ministry of Commerce and Industries supplied the commodity to 70 shops for 54afs per kilo.

A dealer in the Pamir Cinema area, Seyda Jan, said he sold a kilogram of gas for 85afs and purchased it from a private company for 77afs. But another dealer in the Taimani neighbourhood, Hidayatullah, sold the same amount of gas for 75 afs.

One litre of diesel sold for 63afs, and the same quantity of petrol for 59afs, the same as last week, said a fuel station worker in the Shahr-i-Naw locality, Faqir Mohammad.

The price of 560 kilograms of unpeeled oak was 6,800afs and the same amount of cedar accounted for 6500 afs, said a firewood stall owner in the Deh Mazang locality, Syed Aqa.

Abdul Baseer, a jeweler in the Lecce-i-Maryam neighbourhood, said the gold price stayed unchanged. One gram of Arabian gold sold for 2,100 afs and the Iranian variety for 1,750 afs.

Moneychanger Mohammad Amin Jan Khosti said the buying rate of a US dollar was 49.30afs, while 1,000 Pakistani rupees accounted for 540afs. Last week’s exchange value of the greenback stood at 49.20afs and 1,000 Pakistani rupees at 547afs.
