The massive explosion took place at around 10am at a bus terminal the Jamrud sub-district of the Khyber tribal region, bordering Afghanistan, a political administration official told Pajhwok Afghan News.
At least 22 bodies and 30 injured people were evacuated to nearby hospitals, the official said on condition of anonymity, but locals put the toll at 35 dead and 69 wounded.
Journalist Wahidur Rahman said paramilitary troops were among the casualties. Nearby shops and a dozen of vehicles were damaged by the powerful blast, he added.
A dozen dead bodies and eight injured people were brought to the Hayatabad Medical Complex, said a doctor on duty, Shah Jehan. Another 10 bodies and 21 wounded were taken to the Lady Reading Hospital.
Local administration official Shakeel Khan Umerzai said: “We are trying to determine the nature of the explosion. At least three members of the Khasadar force were among the dead.
There was no immediate assertion of responsibility for the assault. Usually, the outlawed Tehrik-i-Taliban Pakistan is blamed for such attacks.
