8-club cricket event begins in Paktia

GARDEZ (PAN), got under way in southeastern Paktia province on Friday, an official said.

The event is being funded by the USAID’s RAMPUP project, and organised by the Paktia Cricket Board. Featuring eight teams, each match would be of 20 overs, the RAMPUP provincial head said.

Rahmatullah Rahimi told Pajhwok Afghan News the provincial board had distributed cricket gear to 128 players participating in the contest, aimed at motivating residents to take part in cleanliness of the provincial capital.

Cricket board representative Niazullah Ahmadzai acknowledged local club players’ competence and commitment, but deplored they were faced with a shortage of the required facilities.

While thanking the USAID-funded project for sponsoring the tournament, he called for providing the necessary resources for the cricketers, who had actively participated in previous cleanliness campaigns.

Mohammadullah, the Rod Ahmadzai Club skipper, complained about the poor playing facilities at the stadium, which could negatively impinge on his team’s performance. However, he was pleased with the holding of the event.
