5 rebels surrender; as many detained

BAMYAN CITY/PUL-I-KHUMRY (PAN): A five-member rebel group joined the peace process in central Bamyan province, while as many militants were detained during a joint operation in northern Baghlan, officials said on Wednesday.

Led by Mullah Abdur Rahman, the group that was active in the Tala Barfak district of Baghlan joined the reconciliation programme, the provincial police chief said.

Brig. Gen. Juma Guldi Yardam told Pajhwok Afghan News the ex-fighters turned in a rocket launcher, two rifles, bullets and four landmines.

The rebels renounced the insurgency as a result of efforts by security officials, Yardam said, promising the individuals would be provided work opportunities.

Abdur Rahman said they had joined the peace process after becoming tired of war, hoping that the government would provide them with jobs.

He said they had been involved in the insurgency since the Taliban regime collapsed, but changed their minds after establishing contacts with Bamyan security officials.

Governor Habiba Sarabi welcomed the surrendering men with an offer of overcoats and flower bouquets.

In northern Baghlan province, five Taliban militants were arrested during a joint operation in the Daulatzai area of Baghlan-i-Markazi district.

District police chief, Col. Kamin, told Pajhwok Afghan News the overnight operation also resulted in the seizure of five weapons and two motorbikes.
