BADAKHSHAN: Avalanches killed four people and injured eight others in the rugged northeastern province of Badakhshan, an official said on Sunday.
The first avalanche, triggered by days of snowfall, hit the Khonilar village of Raghistan district, killing three people, while six others endangered by the snow were rescued in cooperation with residents, the Afghanistan Natural Disasters Management Authority (ANDMA) head for Badakhshan, Sanaullah Amiri, told Pajhwok Afghan News.
Another avalanche took place in Malvan village of Shahr-i-Buzurg district late on Saturday, he said. One civilian was killed in the incident. Another 12 civilians engaged in rescue efforts went missing after another avalanche struck at the area.
However, the individuals were rescued by residents, with eight of them sustaining serious injuries, Amiri said, adding the injured were shifted to the Shahr-i-Buzurg health facility.
Separately, two Sheppard were injured and 130 sheep killed when a heavy snowstorm swept through Aibak city, the capital of neighbouring Samangan province.
Mohammad Amin, a resident of Zhwandon valley, said two Sheppard with 800 domestic animals were trapped in Chadar Tipa area due to the snowstorm. “The Sheppard, who got injured are rescued, but 130 animals are lost”, he concluded.

KABUL: Twenty-one people were sentenced from 3 to 20 years in jail on charges of drug trafficking, the Criminal Justice Task Force (CJTF) said on Sunday.
The individuals were convicted at the end of an open trial on the basis of evidence, the CJTF spokesman, Ahmad Khalid Mowahid, told Pajhwok Afghan News.
Hailing from Helmand, Kandahar, Herat, Balkh, Nangarhar, Farah and Zabul provinces, the men had been arrested with 30 kilograms heroines, 220 kilograms opium, 145 kilograms of hashish, 290 litres of alcohol and 240 litres of acid, he said.
Under the relevant law, the suspect could move Supreme Court against the appellate court decision, he said.

LAGHMAN: Twenty-five antiques have been recovered and handed over to the department of information and culture in eastern Laghman province, officials said on Sunday.
The treasures were seized on the outskirts of Mehtarlam, the provincial capital, on Saturday, a National Directorate of Security (NDS) official said on condition of anonymity. No arrest could be made in connection with the seizure that came following an intelligence report, he said, adding the items were being smuggled to a foreign country.
The antiques were also shown to media men by NDS officials. The information and culture director Faizanullah Pathan confirmed receiving the historic artifacts, saying the antiques, mostly made of wood, were about 250 years old.

NIMROZ: The Taliban fighters killed two men on the charge of spying for Afghan and foreign troops in southwestern Nimroz province, officials said on Saturday.
The victims, residents of Qala-i-Naw area of the Khashrod district, were gunned down by the rebels late on Saturday, Sag. Abdul Jalil, the district police chief, told Pajhwok Afghan News.
The alleged spies were killed after the Taliban recovered satellite cell phones from their possession
Mohammad Hasham Noorzai, the town’s administrative chief, confirmed the incident, but did not provide details.
Gul Mohammad, a provincial council member, said the men belonged to Taimori tribe and had no links with the government.

ZABUL: Ten people, including a police officer, were arrested on robbery charges in two separate operations in southern Zabul province, an official said on Sunday.
An eight-member group, accused of stealing oil from three tankers of foreign troops, was busted in the Senak area on the outskirts of Qalat city on Saturday night, Maj. Ghulam Jealani Farahi, the deputy police chief, told Pajhwok Afghan News.
Meanwhile, two other people, including a police officer, were detained in the Hazara area of Qalat city, the police official said, adding the two had allegedly stolen some cash from a civilian house. The two were arrested after residents informed the police.
The detainees were currently being interrogated and would be referred to the justice department after the interrogation was completed, he said.
