ASADABAD (PAN in the near future to attract the country’s support for the international community’s efforts at bringing peace to Afghanistan.
Visiting the eastern province of Kunar, Kubis held meetings with Governor Fazlullah Wahidi and other local officials and discussed with them the current security situation and development activities in the province, which borders the Pakistan district of Bajaur.
Later, at a joint conference with Wahidi, Kubis, who took over the UN Assistance Mission in Afghanistan (UNAMA) from Swedish diplomat Staffan de Mistura earlier this year, said the UN had always been in favour of peace talks with the anti-government fighters.
However, he said only an Afghan-owned negotiating process could bring peace.
Taliban’s body had made efforts at improving ties between Afghanistan and Pakistan.
Speaking on the occasion, the Kunar governor called Kubis’s visit as fruitful, saying the security situation in his province had improved and the security forces were well-equipped.
However, Wahidi complained about slow-paced development activities in the province, asking the visiting dignitary to call for support from donors and other countries in this regard.
He also asked Kubis to convince the World Bank into launching work on hydroelectric dams in Kunar.
