HERAT CITY (PAN): Up to 109 kilograms of drugs intended for smuggling to neighbouring Iran were seized by police in western Herat province, an official said on Thursday.
The drug cache was seized in at the Islam Qala dry port on Wednesday night, police spokesman Noor Khan Nekzad told Pajhwok Afghan News.
He said the caches, including 85 kilograms of opium and 24 kilograms hashish, was recovered from a truck, the driver, an Iranian citizen, was also detained, the spokesman added.
Elsewhere in the province, 50 kilograms of hashish, six kilograms of opium and a rocket-propelled grenade were seized in the Bazdanak village of Injil district.
Separately, more than five tonnes of narcotics and banned chemicals were torched in Zaranj, the capital of Nimroz province, the police chief said.
Col. Mohammad Musa Rasuli said 1,979 kilograms opium, 1610 kilograms heroin, 42 kilograms hashish, 68 kilograms chemicals and15, 000 litres of acid were burnt.
