BADGHIS: A school in Ishaqzai area was completely destroyed after unidentified gunmen torched the building on Friday night, said an official.
Abdul Ghani Baber, deputy governor, said the blaze damaged all equipment and books inside the school, and police had launched a probe into the arson attack.
He said the reason behind the act is yet to be determined.
The incident happened in the Bala Murghab district of northwestern Badghis province.
Haji Aminul Haq, a tribal elder, said local residents first reached the site and managed to douse the fire, but was unable to save the furniture and books inside the school.

BAGHLAN: A gangland war between two heavily-armed factions lead to the death of three people and a dozen injured in Pul-i-Hesarak district of northern Baghlan province, police said on Saturday.
Police chief Col. Asadullah Shirzad told Pajhwok Afghan News that a violent clash erupted after heated argument between rival gunmen in the morning.
Naeem Mudbir, provincial council head, confirmed the two sides had prior enmity and tribal elders had tried to resolve the conflict to prevent further bloodshed in the area.
Resident Muhammad Jailan said both sides suffered casualties in the firefight and urged the government to take stern action against illegal armed groups.
A similar gang clash in August 2011 left 29 people killed and several wounded in the same area.

ISLAMABAD: At least 12 suspected militants were killed in two separate missile strikes from pilotless US drones in Pakistan border, an official said.
The governmental official, who did not want to be named, told Pajhwok Afghan News the drone struck a house in the Jandawal area, a Taliban stronghold, killing eight suspected militants.
Hours later, the unmanned aircraft targeted a car in the Mandaw area killing four occupants inside the vehicle. Both the house and the car were completely destroyed following the attacks.
Meanwhile, seven Pakistani soldiers were killed and three wounded in an insurgents strike in north Waziristan late on Friday, said the same official.
In the Friday incident a group of rebels launched an attack on the Pakistani convoy in the Datakhel area on the outskirts of Miran Shah in north Waziristan.
He said in response to the attack government soldiers retaliated killing nine militants.

NANGARHAR: Two border policemen and three insurgents were killed during an overnight clash in eastern Nangarhar province, an official said on Saturday.
Another six militants and a policeman were injured in the gun-battle that broke out in the Fateh Mena area of Lalpoor district bordering Pakistan’s tribal region of Khyber late on Friday night, Idrees Momand, the police spokesman said.
The two-hour mid-night clash erupted when a group of militants attacked a border police post on the eastern border, Momand added.
