KABUL): President Hamid Karzai on Sunday said the killing of 17 civilians by a US soldier in southern Kandahar province was an assassination that could not be forgiven.
A rogue US soldier was detained after he shot dead at least 17 civilians, including nine children and three women in Zangabad area of Panjwai district.
Another five civilians were injured as the soldier walked out of his base in the area and started firing at houses, according to Agha Lalai, a member of the provincial council.
“The Afghan government and the people demand an explanation from the US about the killings,” Karzai was quoted as saying in a statement issued from his palace.
It said the President had ordered a delegation to probe the incident.
Karzai also telephoned residents and family members of the victims to share his grief, promising to discuss the killings with US officials.
“This is an assassination, an intentional killing of innocent civilians and cannot be forgiven,” Karzai said, adding he had repeatedly demanded the US stop killing Afghan civilians.
