Avalanches block roads in Nuristan

JALALABAD (PAN): New snow avalanches have blocked roads connecting Kamdesh and Bargmatal districts with the provincial capital, Paroon, in eastern Nuristan province, officials said on Tuesday.

The roads were closed on Monday night, with the public works department trying to reopen them soon, the governor’s spokesman Muhammad Zarin told Pajhwok Afghan News those.

Two people died and 10 houses destroyed as a result of snow avalanches that hit Karo, Kowais and Poshal areas of Mandul district, Zarin said.  

Deputy Governor Qazi Muhammad Nabi Ahmadi said the Afghan Red Crescent Society and the International Medical Corps (IMC) had also sent their rescue teams to the district.

 Nearly 45 people were killed after a massive avalanche buried 15 houses in the province on Monday.
