JALALABAD (PAN): A parliamentary team on Saturday arrived in eastern Nangarhar province to launch a probe into the case of former provincial council head, Jamal Qadir, who has been arrested by the attorney office over an arson attack.

Qadir, a powerful individual, was arrested few days back by the attorney office after a factory owner accused him of attacking his factory and thrashing the factory employees. The trader further alleges Qadir’s supporters had stolen cash from the factory and damaged assets.

Speaking at a news conference in Jalalabad, the provincial capital, soon after their arrival from Kabul, the delegation head, Humayun Humayun, said they would collect information and evidences to determine whether the charges against Qadir were criminal or politically motivated.

The delegation included parliamentarians from eastern Laghman, Nuristan, Kunar and Logar provinces, Sahib Khan, a member of the team, told Pajhwok Afghan News.

Provincial council member Ibrarullah Murad said the dispute between Qadir’s guards and the trader, Farooq, had already been resolved through the mediation of Meshrano Jirga chairman Fazal Hadi Muslim.

He said the arrest of Qadir was a conspiracy by the central and local government.

Intelligence operatives arrested Qadir a week back on the directives of the Attorney General’s Office (AGO) in Kabul.
