KABUL): Kabul residents on Tuesday celebrated the Nawroz, Afghan New Year, festival amid tight security arrangements put in place by the Ministry of Interior.
Police contingents were deployed to different parts of the capital to let citizens celebrate the event in a peaceful environment, the ministry spokesman told Pajhwok Afghan News.
Ghulam Siddique Siddiqui said reserve police units were on alert across Kabul to deal with any untoward situation. However, no incident of violence took place until noon.
Some people were scared by firecrackers late on Monday night, the spokesman said, adding that the ministry’s call for avoiding celebratory fireworks and gunshots had been ignored by some individuals.
As part of the celebrations, Janda Bala (flag-hoisting) ceremonies were held in northern Balkh province and in the Kart-i-Sakhi locality of Kabul.
