SHARAN (PAN): Nine members of the local police force were shot dead by their colleague in the Yahyakhel district of southeastern Paktika province, officials said on Friday.
Mukhlis Afghan, the governor’s spokesman, told Pajhwok Afghan News two local police officials suspected of involvement in the shooting had been detained.
Efforts were underway to arrest a third policeman who managed to flee in a police pick-up along with their colleagues’ weapons after the attack on a checkpoint, he added.
A source, who did not want to be named, identified the attacker as Asadullah, the son of Mullah on the charge of cooperating with the government.
Four of the victims belonged to the same family, he said, adding the militants had convinced Asadullah into shooting his colleagues. The victims were gunned down while sleeping inside the post.
As usual, the Taliban claimed responsibility for the attack. The group’s spokesman Zabihullah Mujahid said the attacker had srrendered the police weapons and vehicles to the fighters.
“One of our men attacked the check-post last night and killed nine local policemen. He managed to escape and joined the Taliban,” the rebel spokesman said in a statement.
