Kandahar council elects new head

KANDAHAR CITY (PAN): Provincial council members in southern Kandahar province on Sunday unanimously elected their new chief, ending a months-long deadlock.

The post remained vacant since the council former chief, Ahmad Wali Karzai, was killed in July 2011 by one of his security guards.

The council members were finally able to elect their head to run affairs of the office that had been closed over the past four months.

Deputy council chief Mohammad Ihsan Noorzai, who ran the office affairs as acting head, was elected in the presence of the governor, his deputy and representatives of the human rights commission.

Rahmatullah was elected as deputy chief and Hafizullah as secretary. Governor Toryalai Weesa, promising all-out support for the council, asked the new chief to try his best to serve the people of the province.
