KANDAHAR CITY (PAN); Afghan army and coalition soldiers found an improvised explosive device (IED) factory in southern Kandahar province, the US military said on Friday.
Afghan army commandos and colaition’s Special Operations Forces (SOF) discovered the factory during an operation near the village of Zapozai in Panjwai district, a statement from the US military said.
The IED factory was discovered on May 16 when the troops searched through a series of compounds around the village. The team found nine pressure plates, four carbon rod contacts, raw ammonium nitrate and a fragmentation grenade rigged with trip wire.
Col. Richard Navarro, the Special Operations Task Force-South commander, said: “The citizens of Panjwai have expressed an increase in dissatisfaction with the number of IEDs maiming or killing innocent locals.”
He added the operation was aimed to help the locals live without fear of IEDs. “Increased security will allow the government of Afghanistan to support development projects aimed at helping the people of Panjwai…”
