3 district courts in Nimroz reopen after decades

ZARANJ (PAN): After remaining closed for more than three decades, courts in three districts of southwestern Nimroz province reopened on Monday, an official said.

Chakhansur, Kang and Chahar Burjak courts stayed shut for nearly 34 years due to a shortage of judges and facilities, said Attaullah Fitri, the provincial appellant court chief.

He told Pajhwok Afghan News the main problem had been low salaries of judges and no one willing to work for meagre pay in the remote districts.

Based on residents’ demand, the provincial council and justice department, the governor’s office requested the Supreme Court to appoint judges and offer them concessions, he said.

Fitri added the reopening of the courts had enabled residents to have their disputes resolved within their towns. He hoped courts in Dilaram and Khashrod districts would also reopen soon.

Besides drawing a monthly salary of $400 (20,000 afs), a district judge is now paid $700 in other concessions, according to Fitri.
