TALOQAN (PAN): One boy was shot dead and another wounded after they tried to run away from a juvenile centre in northern Takhar province, an official said on Tuesday.
Two more teenagers managed escape the detention centre after attacking security guards late on Monday evening, Director of Prisons Gen. Abdul Rab Mutmain said.
He confirmed to Pajhwok Afghan News the guards opened fire to prevent the boys fleeing the centre, but one of them was killed and another wounded.
The governor’s spokesman, Khalilullah Asir, said the boys held at the facility were under 18. The boys, including would-be suicide attackers, had been arrested on different charges, he said. A search for fleeing inmates is ongoing.
Maulvi Shamsuddin, the centre head, said the four boys attacked the guards. He added one of them was killed and another wounded. The boys also beat three guards and a worker, he claimed.
Of 34 boys being held at the correctional facility, most are serving jail terms for committing a variety of offenses.
