JALALABAD (PAN): A Kochi tribal elder was killed in a bomb blast in the Surkhrod district of eastern Nangarhar province on Thursday noon, officials said.

The explosion happened in Khairabad area of the district at 12pm when the car the the nomadi tribal elder was travelling in along with his son hit a roadside mine.

Haji Mazdoor was killed and his son sustained injuries, Ahmad Zia Abdulzai, a spokesman for the governor, told Pajhwok Afghan News.

District chief, Syed Ali Akbar Saadat, said the elder, a resident of Khairabad area, was on his way from Jalalabad — the provincial capital — to his house. “No one has been arrested in this connection so far.”

Dr Baaz Muhammad Khan, head of Nangarhar Civil Hospital, confirmed receiving a dead body from the blast site. However, he gave no more details.

Meanwhile, border police official Idress Momand said a militant was detained following a clash in the Shah Kot area of Nazian district.

The detainee was identified as Qabail, the son of a militant commander in the region. Momand said police also recovered a Kalashnikov from his possession.
