Gas, sugar prices decline in Kabul

KABUL): Prices of sugar and liquefied gas went down during the outgoing week in Kabul, where rates of other essential daily-use commodities stayed stable, retailers said on Thursday.

Taimani-based gas dealer Abdullah told Pajhwok Afghan News one kilogram was sold for 40 afghanis against its last week’s 45afs. He linked the 5afs decline to ample imports and change in weather.

A 50-kilogram bag of Brazilian sugar cost 1,800 afghanis, registering 50afs decrease against its last week’s rate of 1,850 afs, said Haji Fazl Rahman, the Food Traders’ Union head.

However, rates of other food items remained unchanged, as a 50-kilogram bag of Pakistani flour was accounted for 980 afs and the same amount of rice for 2,900 afs, a 5-kg tin of Spin Ghar ghee for 420 afs, a kilo of African black tea for 190afs and the same quantity of Indonesian green tea tagged at 160 afs.

But wholesale prices varied from retail rates in some parts of the city. Karimullah, a shopkeeper in the Qala-i-Fathullah locality, sold a 50-kg sack of Pakistani rice for 2,950 afs and a 50-kg bag of Brazilian sugar for 1,940 afs.

He said the same amount of Pakistani flour cost 1,100 afs, a five-kg tin of ghee 480 afs, a kg of African back tea 210 afs and the Indonesian green tea 190 afs.

Fuel prices remained unchanged over the past week with a litre of petrol costing 65 afs and similar quantity of diesel 62 afs, said Mohammad Siddique, a filling station worker in the Taimani Square area.

One gram of Arabian gold accounted for 2,150afs and the same amount of the Iranian variety 1,800afs, registering no change in prices, said Abdul Baseer, a jeweller in the Lycee Maryam neighbourhood.

Meanwhile, moneychanger Mohammad Amin Khosti said the buying rate of a US dollar was 50.20 afs, while 1,000 Pakistani rupees valued at 542 afs. Last week’s exchange value of the greenback stood at 50.10 afs and 1,000 Pakistani rupees at 547 afs, he said.
