KABUL observer status and accept Turkey as a dialogue partner, Chinese President Hu Jintao said on Thursday.Hu announced the SCO decision at a press conference held after the Beijing summit, held from June 6 to 7 in China’s capital, China’s official news agency reported.
The SCO was founded in Shanghai on June 15, 2001, and currently has six full members — China, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Russia, and Tajikistan Uzbekistan.
Mongolia, Iran, Pakistan and India are the four observer states, and its dialogue partners include Belarus and Sri Lanka.
Afghan President Hamdi Karzai is attending the SCO summit in Beijing.
Addressing the gathering, Pakistan President Asif Ali Zardari said the Afghanistan issue could not be resolved militarily. He added the SCO needed to expand its role in the region.
Peace would elude the region without stability in Afghanistan, the Pakistani leader remarked, calling for a politico-economic approach to peace in the war-battered country.
