Insurgents among 1,000 inmates freed

KABUL’s 93rd independence anniversary, with another 2,000 being freed, officials said on Tuesday.

Director of Prisons Gen. Amir Mohammad Jamshedi said the released prisoners were serving their jail terms in cases like robbery, sexual abuse and murder, but those convicted of abduction had not been released. 

Of the inmates, 154 were released from the Pul-i-Charkhi jail, he said, confirming some inmates who had been detained for having links with the insurgents were also freed. However, he did not provide a specific figure. Jamshidi said another 2,000 prisoners would be released in the near future.

Currently, 24,000 inmates are being held at the country’s jails.  Jamshedi said so far 85 political and criminal inmates had been sentenced to death.  He also talked about a number of problems facing inmates despite efforts to improve jail conditions.

Aziz Ahmad Sarbaz, in charge of monitoring of detention centres, said cases of 2000 prisoners were being investigated and they would be released in line with the presidential decrees.

Calling the investigation process transparent, he asked inmates to inform the commission representing interior, defence, labour and social affairs and justice ministries, NDS and human rights officials, if any of them had been released in return for bribes.

Pul-i-Charkhi Jail Superintendent khan Mohammad asked the freed inmates not to commit crime again and return to a normal life.
