TALUQAN (PAN): The existing 157-kilometre power transmission line from Tajikistan is being extended to Takhar province from neighbouring Kunduz, the Asian Development Bank (ADB) said on Tuesday.
A ceremony to mark construction work on the multimillion ADB-funded project was attended by Da Afghanistan Breshna Sherkat (DABS) Chief Executive Officer Abdul Razique Samadi, also responsible for the construction, ADB Country Director for Afghanistan, Joji Tokeshi, and Country Manager of the lead contractor, KEC International, Subramaniam.
An ADB statement quoted Joji Tokeshi as saying that improvement in Afghanistan’s power infrastructure was critical to bringing electricity to homes and stimulating business activity.
“Power plays a key role in enabling development and reducing poverty, but there’s still much work to be done in this region,” he said during the ceremony.
The $27.8-million transmission line is part of the Energy Sector Development Investment Programme the ADB approved in December, 2008.
The project, which is expected to take 18 months to complete, will extend the existing 157-km line from Tajikistan to Kunduz. The line, operational since October, 2011, has been funded by ADB.
Other projects being financed under the programme include a 220-KKV transmission line from Kunduz to Taluqan, constructing small hydropower plants in Badakhshan and Bamyan, and rehabilitating gas fields in Sheberghan. The proposed line from Kunduz to Taluqan will bring power to an estimated 40,000 Afghans.
