KABUL) Two people were killed and five others injured Wednesday morning when police shot two suicide bombers in Kabul, setting off one of their explosive vests, police said.
The bombers were in security uniform and carried rifles and hand grenades when police spotted and shot them in the Wazir Akbar Khan diplomatic neighborhood, said Najibullah Danish, a spokesman for the Ministry of Interior.
Kabul police chief Mohammad Ayub Salangi told Pajhwok Afghan News.two security guards for a nearby foreign military compound were killed and one injured in the ensuing explosion.
As well, two passers-by and two employees of the Ministry of Defence driving by the scene at the time of the blast at 8:20am were injured, Ayubi added.
The two bombers’ intended target was not immediately known but Salangi said Afghanistan’s chief justice and deputy minister of defense live in the street and that several foreign civilian and military compounds are located nearby.
As usual, the Taliban claimed responsibility for the attack, saying the bombers targeted the local office of the Central Intelligence Agency (CIA).
