FAIZABAD (PAN): A dozen of children have died of pneumonia, the single largest cause of death in children worldwide, in the northeastern province of Badakhshan, officials said on Friday.
The children aged between six months and four years lost their lives to the disease on Thursday in the Shura village of Nusi district, the governor’s spokesman, Abdul Maroof Rasikh, told Pajhwok Afghan News.
Soon after the incident, health workers reached the village through Tajikistan because roads leading to the district have been blocked due to snowfall, he said, fearing another 350 children were at higher risk of dying.
Rasikh asked the Ministry of Public Health to dispatch as soon as possible medicine to the district by air as roads in 12 districts of the province were closed by heavy snow.
