Taliban freed from main jails

KABUL prisoners have been released from the Bagram jail, north of Kabul, in the central province of Parwan, and a defence ministry’s detention facility, an official said on Friday.

So far more than 500 Taliban prisoners have been released from the Bagram jail previously run by US forces since it was transferred to Afghan control last year.

The 80 individuals were released from the Bagram jail and the detention centre at the Pul-i-Charkhi check post on the eastern outskirts of Kabul, military police spokesman, Col. Dehati, told Pajhwok Afghan News.

“A special court investigated the cases of the detainees and ordered the release of those found innocent or having completed their terms,” Dehati said, adding the jury included representatives from the Supreme Court, the Attorney General’s Office, the National Directorate of Security (NDS), interior and defence ministries.

The Taliban released belonged to Logar, Maidan Wardak, Kapisa, Parwan, Paktia, Khost and Paktika provinces, he said, adding another 1,200 prisoners were expected to be released from the Bagram and other jails this year.

Currently, 3,000 inmates are being held at the Bagram Jail and 400 others at the Pul-i-Charkhi prison.
