HERAT CITY (PAN): At least three people died and four others sustained injuries as flash floods unleashed by heavy rains hit 15 districts in western Herat and Badghis provinces, officials said on Sunday.
Floodwaters inundated many parts of Herat City, where several homes caved in and crops washed away.
One person was killed and four others were injured in Pashtoon Zarghon district, Herat Governor Dr. Dawood Shah Saba told reporters. The casualties took place at a refugee camp called Ferqay, he said.
He said several homes were destroyed and crops over large swaths of land swept away by flash floods, but gave no details.
Afghanistan Natural Disaster Management chief for eastern zone Abdul Hamid Hamidi said two people died when the roof of their house collapsed in Badghis.
He said they had sent a team to assess life and property losses in the flood-hit areas. “The refugee camp is completely submerged by floodwaters,” he said.
A woman at the camp said her husband and four children were missing since last night.
Herat chief for Afghan Red Crescent Society chief Nooruddin Ahamdi said the affected families were delivered food, medicine and warm clothing
Meanwhile, police shot injured two prisoners during a jailbreak attempt at the central jail in Herat city, deputy police Brig. Gen. Abdul Hameed said.
