SHIBERGHAN (PAN): A newly-wed woman allegedly hanged herself to death at her maternal home in northern Jawzjan province, where 26 girls died last year in violence-related incidents, officials said Thursday.
The 20-year-old was found dead in the morning in the Aqcha district, the down’s administrative head, Asadullah Bahrami, told Pajhwok Afghan News. Her husband, who has a second wife, was taken into police custody as part of an investigation, he said.
An investigation team had reached the site to determine the cause behind the extreme step, police officer Col. Abdul Latif said.
Civil Hospital chief Dr. Mirwais Amini confirmed they had been delivered the body, but stopped short of giving details, pending to autopsy report.
Human rights official Maghfirat Samimi said it was another shocking incident. So far 26 women have died over the last 10 months in incidents of violence against the folk. “We should look into the fact. If she is murdered, the killers should be brought to justice and punished,” she said.
