Civil society activists on strike against Hazara carnage

The men began their strike in front of the United Nations Assistance Mission for Afghanistan (UNAMA) regional office in Bamyan City a day after a heavy blast killed 84 Shiites and wounded another 150 in the Pakistani city of Quetta.

Mohammad Dawood Wasil, a hunger striker, told Pajhwok Afghan News they would continue to fast until the United Nations Security Council took serious steps against the systematic killing of Hazara people in the two countries. 

“Mujahideen killed them in Yakaw Lang district of Bamyan. The minority continues to be subjected to genocidal acts, something that forced me to go on hunger strike,” he said.

He accused the Inter-Services of Intelligence (ISI) of Pakistan of playing a main role in architecting such attacks in the neighbouring country.

UNAMA regional office refused to comment on the issue, but promised to discuss the strikers’ demand with their main office in Kabul.  

Deputy Governor Mohammad Asif Mobaligh visited the strikers along with police chief Abdul Razzaq Elkhani. The two urged UNAMA to help address the strikers’ demand as soon as possible because they were exposed to harsh weather conditions.

President Hamid Karzai has strongly condemned the Saturday’s attack in Quetta, renewing his call for a join struggle and cooperation in rooting out terrorism from the region.
