KHOST CITY (PAN): An anti-riot police unit of 100 personnel has been set up in southeastern Khost province to deal with protest rallies and control civilians causalities, officials said on Saturday.
The unit was formed within the framework of the provincial police headquarters, the Khost police chief, Abdul Qayyum Baqizoi, told Pajhwok Afghan News. The unit has been equipped with modern weapons and other equipment.
Previously protestors were dispersed by force, involving baton charge and fire into the air, but the unit would use modern equipment to deal with violent protests, Baqizoi said.
During the training course, the personnel had been taught effective mob-control techniques, said Sher Zaman, in charge of the nascent unit. They were ready to discharge their duty in a professional and disciplined manner, he added.
