KABUL): President Hamid Karzai on Monday tasked the Ministry of Foreign Affairs to launch talks with Iranian authorities on preventing the execution of Afghans in the neighbouring country.
The directives came at a Cabinet meeting, three days after five people of the Glifgan district of northern Takhar province were put to death in Iran and their bodies transported to their native villages.
A statement from the Administrative Affairs Department said the national security advisor was asked to discuss with Iranian officials the issue of death-row Afghans prisoners.
Participants also conferred on foreign assistance, according to the statement, which said foreign and finance ministries were instructed to coordinate aid with donors.
The meeting stressed that international assistance be spent through the government’s budget in line with the decisions taken at recent conferences and Afghanistan’s sovereignty.
All government departments were asked to take the finance ministry into confidence while seeking or spending aid and avoid direct utilisation of funds.
