PUL-I-KHUMRI (PAN): An indigent man sold his newly-born twin daughters following the death of his spouse in delivery at the Baghlan Civil Hospital, officials said on Tuesday.
The 35 years old brought his pregnant wife to Pul-i-Khumri, the capital of norther Baghlan province, from Dohn-i-Ghori district.
Aged 28, the woman was evacuated to hospital after profuse bleeding, according to a lady doctor, who told Pajhwok Afghan News that it was too late for them to save her.
Dr. Najla said soon after the man shifted his wife’s body and twin daughters from the maternity ward, they were informed he had sold the twins in front of the hospital.
He vended one baby for 20,000 afs (nearly $400) and another for 30,000 afs before leaving the scene along with the corpse, claimed Mohammadullah, a shopkeeper in the Pul-i-Khumri.
The shopkeeper said the weeping told people outside the hospital that he was broke and unable to take care of the twins. He reportedly put up the babies for sale in the interest of their future.
Col. Noor Gul, crime branch chief at the police headquarters, said they had launched an investigation into the incident. They would provide assistance to the man and return him the babies.
They would decide after knowing the reasons of selling the twin daughters by the person, the governor’s spokesman, Mahmud Haqmal, said.
