Journalists, writers call for end to war (video)

JALALABAD (PAN): Calling on all parties to the conflict to cease fire, journalists and writers in eastern Afghanistan on Monday said they had become tired of filing stories on endemic violence.

The call came from a large number of members of the Independent Journalists and Writers Association who held a protest gathering in front of the governor’s house in Jalalabad, the capital of Nangarhar province.

Unrest in the country was on the increase but they were fed up with reporting on war casualties, said Taqiullah Taqi, a reporter with 1 TV. He told Pajhwok Afghan News there had lately been a significant increase in news reports about violence.

He said one piece of the latest heartbreaking news was the death of nearly a dozen children in an airstrike in neighbouring Kunar province. A few days ago, 50 people were killed and nearly 100 others wounded in a coordinated insurgent attack on a courthouse in Farah.

“We have become tired of filing such news stories. Journalists are resultantly showing signs of depression in addition to developing a pessimistic attitude to future,” he explained.
