KABUL Journalists’ Union on Wednesday honoured two journalists with the Ajmal Naqashbandi Courage Awards for showing exceptional boldness in performing their duties.
Naqashbandi, a 27 years old reporter, was beheaded in 2008 after being kidnapped along with Italian journalist Daniele Mastrogiacomo, who was released in exchange for five senior militants.
Ali Akbar Rustami, a Hasht-i-Subh newspaper reporter and Syed Jan Sabawoon, a freelance photojournalist, received the medals at a gathering marking International Media Freedom Day.
Fahim Dashti, the Afghanistan Journalist Union executive director, said Ali Akbar had been nominated by the union for the investigative reports that he has filed during his career.
Sabawoon was selected in recognition of the courage he had shown in extremely difficult circumstances, Dashti said, adding the photographer had been beaten by security forces, but he did not quit his job.
Rustami has written a number of investigative reports on land grab and administrative graft, exposing many corrupt individuals.
