KANDAHAR CITY (PAN): Twin bomb explosions rocked southern Kandahar province on Friday evening, killing and wounding dozens of people, officials said.
At least nine bodies and 70 wounded people have been brought to the Mirwais Civil Hospital in Kandahar City from the Aino Mena area, where the blasts happened, a doctor confided to Pajhwok Afghan News.
The explosions took place near a township at 7.40pm, according to witnesses, who said more casualties were on their way to hospital. The powerful blasts were heard in far-off areas, they added.
Javed Faisal, the governor’s spokesman, said one bomb hit a police pick-up and the second struck a vehicle that carrying explosives.
Faisal confirmed the casualties, saying the attacks occurred at a time when a large number of people were visiting the locality. There was no immediate claim of responsibility for the bombings.
President Hamid Karzai, meanwhile, condemned the bomb attacks as a cowardly and savage act that had once again proved the terrorists’ utter disregard for all human and Islamic norms.
In a statement from his office, the president extended his condolences to the bereaved families and prayed for the swift recovery of those injured in the explosions.
