KABUL): The Ministry of Interior (MoI) announced on Monday the private companies providing security for foreign military bases would be dissolved soon.
But the licenses of the companies keeping diplomats’ security would be renewed, Deputy Interior Minister Lt. Gen. Abdul Jamil Junbish told a press conference in Kabul.
All illegal security companies had been dissolved according to a presidential decree, and the firms securing foreign military bases would follow suit, he said.
Fifty-seven Afghan and foreign security companies, which failed to acquire licences, had been disbanded so far, he added. Another 52 companies with legal documents have also been dissolved.
Eight more companies that failed to produce legal documents were disbanded and four others placed under the control of the Public Order Department of the ministry.
Thirty-four private security firms are still in operation, according to the deputy minister, who said the licences of 19 companies providing security for diplomatic mission would be renewed.
A proposal for the closure of 15 companies offering security services to foreign military bases in Afghanistan had been sent to the Cabinet for approval, he explained.
So far more than 2,600 weapons of different kinds had been collected from the companies dissolved, Lt. Gen. Junbish said. The recovery of weapons had helped improved the security situation, he concluded.
