KABUL): President Hamid Karzai and British Prime Minister David Cameron have discussed new developments in the ongoing Afghan-led reconciliation process, the Presidential Palace said on Wednesday.
Cameron phoned the president on Tuesday evening, hours after the US special representative for Afghanistan left Kabul for Islamabad.
A statement Karzai’s office said the two leaders conferred on the opening of Taliban‘s political office in Qatar and Afghanistan’s relations with neighbouring countries. The president categorically states his position on the issues.
After a meeting with Ambassador James Dobbins, Pakistani Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif on Tuesday phoned Karzai and invited him to visit Islamabad for talks on issues of mutual interest.
The state-owned Radio Pakistan said the Afghan leader had accepted Sharif’s invitation after discussing bilateral relations and regional situation.
Separately, US President Barack Obama, in a video conference with his Afghan counterpart, reiterated his commitment to an Afghan-led and Afghan-owned peace and reconciliation process.
“The leaders reaffirmed that an Afghan-led peace and reconciliation process is the surest way to end violence and ensure lasting stability in Afghanistan and the region…” the White House said.
