During his visit to Rome, Rasmussen commended Italy’s “pivotal role in ISAF” and its intention to play a leading part in the post-2014 mission, a statement on the NATO website said
The NATO chief, at a meeting with Italian Defence Minister Mario Mauro, discussed ways to improve capabilities amid the current difficult economic times through the use of multinational smart defence projects. Italy participates in 17 of the projects and leads three of them.
Letta announced he would be visiting the Italian troops in Afghanistan on Aug. 12.
