KABUL and the US was a mutual contact between the two countries and the alliance would welcome and support it.

Christopher Chambers, NATO senior civilian representative spokesman, who appeared in a joint press conference with NATO-led ISAF spokesman Brig. Gen. Heinz Feldmann, said the Bilateral Security Agreement (BSA) was purely about mutual understanding between Afghanistan and the US.

He said the BSA is an agreement between the United Sates and Afghanistan. NATO would welcome and support a signed BSA, and an agreement. NATO has made a commitment to Afghanistan post 2014-as agreed with the Aghan governament in the Chicago Declaration- to train, advice , and assist the ANSF, but the mission will require a sound legal framework to proced.

NATO led forces commander in Afghanistan Gen. Joseph Dunford has recently said that signing the security cooperation agreement guaranteed a stable future for Afghanistan.

He believed the agreement would be a clear message for Afghan people, world that the international community at the top US were committed to peace and stability in Afghanistan.

US official say the accord is expected to be signed in October this year before electioneering for the April 5 presidential elections begins in Afghanistan.

But Afghan officials insist the agreement would not be signed until the government’s conditions and the country’s interests are protected.

The Afghan government suspended talks on the accord with the US to protest the way the Taliban opened their office in Qatar.

At the press conference, NATO’s military spokesman Brig. Gen. Feldmann said NATO needed a legal framework to stay in Afghanistan beyond 2014, saying both sides were working in this regard.

He said NATO stay in Afghanistan beyond the formal drawdoan was in the interest of Afghanistan and the international community. He said he was confident they would reach an agreement in this regard.
