BAMYAN CITY (PAN): Police seized an explosives-laden van at the entrance to the provincial capital of central Bamyan province and its driver arrested on Monday.
The flying-coach type vehicle carried a total of 1,348kg of explosive materials and was en route to central Daikundi province, Bamyan police chief, Brig. Gen. Abdul Razaq Eilkhani, told Pajhwok Afghan News, citing confessions from the detained person.
The case is being investigated, he said, calling the seizure the largest so far in Bamyan. The explosives could be used somewhere in Bamyan City, the former Samangan police chief suspected.
The governor’s spokesman, Abdul Rahman Ahmadi, praised local residents for their cooperation with police, saying a terrorist attack had been thwarted with their help.
Bamyan is considered relatively peaceful province, where NATO-led troops transitioned overall security responsibilities to Afghan forces about two years ago.
