ISLAMABAD (PAN‘s former military ruler Gen. (R) Pervez Musharraf in the assassination of ex-prime minister Benazir Bhutto.
Bhutto, the charismatic chairperson of the Pakistan People’s Party, was assassinated in a gun-bomb attack in the garrison town of Rawalpindi in 2007.
Musharraf was produced before ATC Judge Habibur Rehman this morning amid tight security arrangements, Prosecutor Chaudhry Azhar said as the hearing continued.
“Musharraf has been charged with murder, criminal conspiracy to murder and murder facilitation,” he said, adding then Rawalpindi police chief Saud Aziz, ex-superintendent of police Khurram Shahzad and four others were also indicted.
The court ordered the authorities to produce all defendants for the next hearing fixed on August 27. The indictment of the ex-army chief represents a rare event in Pakistan, where the military is seen as the ultimate power broker.
