Nimroz police chief detained on drug charges

KABUL): The police chief for southwestern Nimroz province has been detained on the charge of collaborating with drug traffickers at the Kabul International Airport, a senior official said on Friday.

Nimroz Governor Mohammad Sarwar Subat told Pajhwok Afghan News the provincial police chief, brig. Gen. Kabir Andarabi had been detained by the counternarcotics police two days ago. But the governor would not go into details.

But Javed Kargar, the Nimroz police spokesman, refuted the allegation, saying Andarabi had not been arrested and that he was currently in Kabul. Kargar offered no information on why the police boss was staying in Kabul.

Deputy Minister of Counternarcotics Baz Mohammad Ahmadi told journalists a few days ago that senior government figures, including police officers, had connections with drug cartels.

Governor Subat said Gen. Andarabi was arrested at the Kabul airport before embarking on a flight for western Herat province, from where he was to arrive in Nimroz.
