HERAT CITY (PAN): A dreaded militant commander was killed along with eight associates in western Herat province, security officials claimed on Friday.
Abdullah Akbari, the insurgent leader, and his accomplices were eliminated in an overnight Afghan army operation in the Siawash are of Guzra district.
Mehdi Qadiri, a spokesman for the Afghan National Army (ANA) commando unit, said the soldiers recovered explosives, military equipment and the rebel leader’s body.
Area resident Sher Khan told Pajhwok Afghan News the overnight raid involved army aircraft and ground forces. He claimed seeing the militants’ bodies at the site.
Col. Najibullah Najibi, a spokesman for the 207th Zafar Military Corps, also verified Akbari’s killing during the raid. He said civilians suffered no harm in the operation.
