Fazlur Rahman arrives in Kabul, meets Karzai

KABUL Pakistani politician and religious leader Maulana Fazlur Rahman, who arrived in Kabul on Friday, met with President Hamid Karzai in his office.

Chief of his own faction, Jamiat-i-Ulema, the Presidential Palace said in a statement.

On the day one of his visit to Kabul, the Pakistani leader held a meeting with Karzai and both leaders conferred on issues concerning relations between two the neighbouring countries.

The statement said the two sides stressed brotherly relations and sincere friendship between Kabul and Islamabad and discussed ways how to get rid of extremism and terrorism plaguing both countries.

They underlined the need for increased cooperation between the two countries in the fight against terrorism, the statement said.

Political expert Mohammad Hassan Haqyar said Fazlur Rahman’s visit was important because he could play an important role in the Afghan peace process.

He said the JUI chief had good relations with the Pakistani government and the Taliban, who listened to him.

Fazlur Rahman arrives at a time when US Secretary of State John Kerry is in Kabul for talks with President Karzai to end the impasse in negotiations on a key security pact between Kabul and Washington.

Rahman is expected to spend three days in Kabul. Hs last trip to Afghanistan was in the late 1990s when the Taliban were in power. During that visit, he had met Taliban supreme leader Mullah Mohammad Omar in Kandahar.
